樂蒂自從年前主演了那部獲得國際人士好評的邵氏出品「倩女幽魂」之後，即獲致「古典美人」的美譽，再經去年主演了「花田錯」、「紅樓夢」兩片，這一「古典美人」的美譽更是不脛而走。預料她在這部新作「玉堂春」裡，必將創出更輝煌豐碩的成績。
「玉堂春」的故事，哀感頑艷，曲折動人。劇情描寫古代名妓蘇三的半生坎坷遭遇，歷盡滄桑災劫，賺人眼淚。
蘇三的外號叫「玉堂春」，她有一張艷麗如桃的臉孔，但不幸命薄如桃，風塵墮溷，幹着迎送生涯於京師妓院。這天，她到隆福寺去進香，和罷職吏部尚書的公子王金龍邂逅，彼此一見鍾情。金龍旋獲悉她就是名妓蘇三，即到妓院去親近她，因他倜儻翩翩，蘇三對他很是傾心。不過勾欄原是銷金窩，金龍個人滯留京師已久，已告床頭金盡，遭受鴇奴白眼，幸得蘇三贈金，黯然歸鄉，自此發奮讀書，數年有成，重赴京師應考，竟獲獨佔鰲頭，大魁天下。而這時的蘇三，已給一個豪富看中，量金贖出勾欄院，攜返山西作妾。但這豪富的原配竟是個不守婦道的淫奔之女，瞞着豪富去偷漢子，卻給蘇三窺破好亊，淫婦大驚，陰謀下毒殺蘇三，不料誤殺豪富，淫婦便又和奸夫串謀，架禍蘇三，賄通知縣，把蘇三苦打成招。金龍這時已拜命八府巡按，巡抵太原，發現了這宗案情，於是力求翻案，替蘇三洗冤，這對歷刧鴛鴦，才獲重聚。
