The highlight of the Standard-Sing Tao Chinese New Year Aid Needy Drive this was the Fat Choy Movie Ball, which featured the greatest array of movie and night-club talent ever seen together in Hongkong.
The benefit ball, organized by Shaw Motion Picture Studio in conjunction with the Standard-Sing Tao newspapers, was in aid of the Fat Choy Drive.
It was night-club entertainment at its best. Champagne blended with beauty and talent to make it an evening that will long be remembered by the cafe society set as the best they have ever known.
Shaw's galaxy of stars joined the colony’s top night-club artists in presenting an uninterrupted program of lively entertainment.
Climaxing the evening’s entertainment was a dance number of Asia’s movie queen Lin Dai, who took time out of her busy shooting schedule to attend the ball, and to do an impromptu rock 'n roll and cha-cha number with Peter Chen Ho as her leading man.
Throughout the Fat Choy Drive, the Shaw organisation pitched in to give it added impetus.
Shaw's stars auctioned off footballs, visited collection centres and braved “reckless rickshaw pullers” in order to boost the Fat Choy takings.
MOVIE BALL FAT CHOY FUND
The first one to help out the Fat Choy Drive was Shaw’s “Little Angel”, Ting Ning. She braved chilly winds to go to the Fat Choy Football Game.
She and Miss Han Ching-ching together auctioned off a football which was sold to Miss Chow Wai-ying, who bid $2,500 for it.
Four of Shaw’s stars took part in the novelty rickshaw race which highlighted the second day of the Rediffusion—Ridao Hongkong Fat Choy Broadcasts.
The four pretty passengers on the rickshaws were Mei Yueh-hua, Ting Hung, Tu Chuan and Man Li-hung.
The race which attracted huge crowds at the Central reclamation in front of Electra House, featured disc jockeys, Nick Kendall, John Wallace, Ted Thomas and Frank Miles as the “dare-devil pullers”.
Shaw’s most promising young star Patricia Lam Fung sacrificed her spare time to help out the Fat Choy cause. She was at the Nathan Hotel Collection Centre to boost the takings at that centre.
Her charming presence had an immediate effect, and her fans flocked to the collection centre. She also gave out autographed pictures of her own to any donor giving more than $1.

“HONGKONG THIS WEEK” IS GOOD LISTENING
The radio program “Hongkong This Week” is gaining in popularity not only in this colony but throughout South-East Asia.
Combining first-class entertainment with education, this program features the best in local vocalists together with the latest news from the movie colony in Hongkong, and talks of educational value.
The idea of starting such a program, which would entertain listeners and at the same time be of educational value for the whole of South-East Asia, was first conceived by several radio personalities who visited Hongkong two years ago.
They went to work and by September of 1957, the first recorded program of “Hongkong This Week” was ready to go on the air.
“Hongkong This Week” first went on the air in Taiwan, Bangkok, Saigon, Manila, Cebu, Singapore and Malaya. It proved so popular that now this program is broadcast by radio stations in all the major cities and many small towns of South East-Asia.
Also known as the “Voice of Stars,” the program in its one and a half successful years has featured such guest celebrities from abroad as William Holden, Gloria Romero Marion Anderson, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden.

「我們這短短的播音，希望你細細的收聽。報導你祈望的內容，介紹你喜歡的明星；還有那流行的音樂，帶給你美妙的歌聲。細聽！細聽！他們是精神營養的食品；細聽！細聽！他們是文化交流的先鋒！」——說起「香港一週」這個節目的開始，那是非 常偶然的，兩年前一個夏天，有幾位從外埠來的廣播界人士偶然談起，覺得東南亞各地似乎缺少一些比較理想的，編排適當的文教娛樂的節目，不免使人感覺枯燥；有些節目太偏重文教方面，不允免讓人感覺枯燥；有些則太過注重娛樂呢？卻又顯得內容空洞。所以在經過兩個月的籌備，第一次「香港一週」終於在去年九月錄音完成，分發各地電台試播。
當時開始試播的地區是台灣、曼谷、西貢、星加坡和馬來亞五個地方，結果各地電台都感到滿意，他們還提供了很多寶貴的意見，這樣就奠定了這個節目的基礎。後來沙勝越等地電台也要求供應這個節目，到現在，這個節目在東南亞各大都市或小鄉村差不多都有電台在播放了。
這個節目究竟包含些什麼呢？在普通情形來說，每一次都有一位歌星來唱一首香港現時流行的歌曲，這些歌曲有時是時代曲，有時是英文流行歌曲。主唱這些流行歌曲的歌星，都是很有名的。像方逸華、江玲、潘迪華、逸敏等就時常參加這個節目。同時這個節目也介紹一些最新出版的書籍或雜誌，有些是創作，有些是譯述。不過，大多是東南亞作家的作品，而且是在香港出版的。
電影方面的報導。在每一次節目中，都介紹一部新的國語影片，有時是訪問這部影片的主角，談論這部影片的劇情；有時也介紹影片的獨特優點和播放片中的插曲。兩年來，差不多每一位著名的男女明星都參加過這個節目。有時路過香港或到香港來拍戲的明星，像荷里活的威廉荷頓，以及台灣張仲文、穆虹、黃曼等都參加這個節目的播出。
除了這些以外，這個節目的主持人也實地到攝影場作錄音訪問，使聽衆能瞭解電影公司的實際工作情形。有時也去參加一個音樂會。總之，除了爵士音樂外，對古典音樂或歌唱以及中國民謠小調，凡是可以引起聽衆興趣的，無不網羅淨盡，貢獻給聽衆欣賞。學術演講類雖然比較枯燥一些，但也曾請過很多名家講述。如吳鐵翼講的有關電影編劇方面的理論，王植波談寫毛筆字的經驗等，也受到一部分聽衆歡迎。
「有獎猜歌遊戲」當然是聽衆最歡喜的一個節目，也是測驗聽衆反應的一個最好方法。一次猜歌遊戲，收到各地來信差不多有八千多封，有一次是從遙遠的印尼一個小地方寄來的，甚或有一個學校全級學生同時簽字參加。由此可見，這個節目不但受到歡迎，而且確實是成功了。
你們扭開你的收音機吧，當你聽到由著名歌星方逸華、顧媚、沈良、陳堅等合唱的「……細聽，細聽，他們是精神營養的食品；細聽，細聽，他們是文化交流的先鋒。」你就知道這是最受歡迎的「香港一週」廣播節目開始了。（汪汪）
