THE MOST POPULAR STARS
Five of the ten most popular stars picked by the public of Hongkong during 1961 were stars of Shaw Brothers.
They were Lin Dai, Peter Chen Ho, Betty Loh Tih, Kwan Shan and Margaret Tu Chuan.
This is an annual event organized by the Wah Kiu Evening News of Hongkong, since 1957.
Lin Dai has been picked on three previous occasions and this is the fourth time she is chosen, as for Peter Chen Ho he has been picked every year.
Newcomers to the ten are Kwan Shan and Margaret Tu Chuan. Kwan Shan joined Shaw Brothers last year but he is noted as the only screen actor in Hongkong to win an international award as the best actor. Margaret Tu Chuan, who started her climb on the ladder of success in a movie career with her first starring role in "To Marry A Millionaire" has proven that she is gaining in popularity every day.
The presentation of the Golden Globes awards was held at the Kwong Chow Restaurant, with the Sir Sik-nin Chau, Senior Unofficial Member of the Executive Council presenting the awards to the actors and Mrs. Shum Wai-yau presenting them to the actresses.
香港華僑晚報自於一九五七年起舉辦了第一屆香港國語及粵語十大明星選舉，每年均繼續舉行，到最近為止，已一共舉辦了五屆。
一九六一年度的第五屆國語及粵語十大明星選舉，已於十二月間揭曉，並於香港石塘咀廣州酒家舉行頒獎典禮，由香港華人首席代表周錫年爵士主持頒授獎品，儀式簡單隆重。
每一位當選明星，都獲得一座富有紀念性的「金球獎」。
邵氏兄弟公司旗下男女明星，膺選為本屆國語十大明星之一的，共有五位，計為林黛、樂蒂、陳厚、杜娟、關山等，平分了「十大明星」的半數。
頒獎那天，當選「十大」的邵氏男女明星，除了林黛因爲要到清水灣拍新片，托由杜娟代表她領獎外，樂蒂、陳厚、杜娟、關山等均穿著盛服，由邵氏公司宣傳部人員陪同浩蕩到達會場。
在這幾位邵氏明星登臨廣州酒家會場時，受到大會主持人和包圍在場內外的無數影友的熱烈歡迎。
幾乎都手不停揮地替年輕的影友們簽名、紀念冊及簽照片。同時，並分別接受香港電台外勤記者的錄音訪問。
在頒獎節目中，由周錫年爵士分別將「金球獎」頒與樂蒂、杜娟、林黛（林黛的獎品由杜娟代領）。岑維休夫人則分別將「金球獎」頒與陳厚、關山。
這幾位邵氏明星於領過獎品，蟬聯或初次躍登「十大明星」的寶座，分別將獎品頒與得獎的讀者。
樂蒂則由第四屆起當選，本屆是她第五次蟬聯。
杜娟自於一九五八年攻進邵氏，以「狂戀」一片，竄紅影壇，三年以來，一共主演了十多部影片，演技一天比一天進步，而賣座紀錄，也一部比一部增高。現在，她已經成爲最受觀衆歡迎的女明星，她榮登「十大明星」寶座，確是非常公平的。
關山過去曾得過瑞士羅嘉諾影展「最佳男主角」獎，自於半年前加入邵氏，即與林黛合演「不了情」，贏得觀衆一致好評，接着他又和林黛再度攜手合演「血痕鏡」，又和丁寧、杜娟合演「姊妹情仇」，均有輝煌的成績。他登上「十大明星」的寶座，也是合理的事。

最近，陳厚突然做了老闆，在香港九龍尖沙咀繁盛區的一家名叫「福祿壽」的珠寶香水店。
不要誤會，她不是棄影從商，而是幾個要好的朋友邀他合作經營。
「福祿壽」開幕的一天，並設雞尾酒會招待嘉賓。林黛、樂蒂、丁寧、張沖、莫愁、唐丹、王沖等及各界友好多人均到致賀。陳厚初任老闆，週旋在賓客之間，忙個不了。
陳厚在影壇已經有崇高的地位，而且交遊廣闊，是可以預期的。
陳厚身為老闆，在新店開幕酒會，神氣十足。

He is a partner in a store which specializes in selling perfume and jewelry on the first floor of Far East Mansion.
Peter however is not quitting his movie career to go into business. He will keep both up.
He threw a cocktail party on opening day and among those who attended were his movie star friends including Lin Dai, Loh Tih, Ting Ning, Paul Chang Chung, Lily Mo Chau, Tong Dan and many others.

Lin Dai-yu is the heroine of the well-known Chinese literary classic "Dream Of The Red Chamber".
She is recognized as the classic Chinese beauty of the past centuries.
In the Shaw Brothers production of this film, Betty Loh Tih plays the role of Lin Dai-yu. She is looked upon by many as the incarnation of the famed beauty of Chinese literature.
Those who had seen "The Magic Touch" would have had a preview of Loh Tih as Lin Dai-yu, and would certainly agree that no one could play this role better.
Others featured in this film directed by Yuen Chau-feng, are Grace Ting Ning, Pat Ting Hung, Margaret Tu Chuan, Ku Mei, Tong Dan, Lily Mo Chau, Jen Chieh, Chen Yun-hua, Kao Pao-shu and many others.

邵氏兄弟公司的綜藝體大銀幕絢麗七彩古裝豪華鉅製「紅樓夢」，經過三年規劃，半年籌備，已於去年底開拍。
「紅樓夢」是中國文學名著，故事複雜，人物衆多，「紅樓夢」影片，就是原著擷取精華，把故事重心放在林黛玉身上，故計由她初入榮國府起，到她歸天止，中間包括了「焚稿」、「葬花」等精彩而動人的場面。
這位「秉絕代之姿容，具稀世之俊美」，卻是多愁善病，從懂得吃飯就要吃藥的林黛玉，曾給原著人曹雪芹描寫成一才貌世所稀」的人物，說她「兩灣似蹙非蹙籠烟眉，一雙似喜非喜含情目，態生兩靨之愁，嬌襲一身之病，淚光點點，嬌喘微微，閒靜似嬌花照水，行動如弱柳扶風，心較比干多一竅，病如西子勝三分。」活現一個病態的淚美人，讀者眼底。
在「紅樓夢」影片裡，扮演林黛玉的是有古裝美人之稱的樂蒂，毫無疑問，這是理想的人選，在現實生活上，都有若干林黛玉，一點不嫌誇張。遠在三年前，邵氏當局即計劃把「紅樓夢」搬上銀幕，爲了要發掘飾演林黛玉的人才，曾使樂蒂在「妙手回春」一片裡出過「黛玉葬花」的戲中戲，以測驗她對這個角色的演出成績，果然一鳴驚人，她演得竟像再生的林黛玉！這一來，就奠定了她今天主演「紅樓夢」的基礎。
「紅樓夢」這部邵氏綜藝體彩色鉅製，除了樂蒂飾演林黛玉外，還有丁寧飾花襲人，丁紅飾寶釵，杜娟飾紫娟，顧媚飾金釧，唐丹飾雪雁，高寶樹飾王熙鳳，莫愁飾晴雯，紅薇飾賈夫人，陳雲華飾王夫人，任潔飾寶玉，金銓飾焙茗，趙雷飾賈政，陣容強大，邵氏旗下一流女星，大部份動員。而負責導演這部偉大鉅製的，則是青年導演袁秋楓。
